Witchy things I've learnt on the way

There are some things you will not learn immediately. Some things come along the way. I've collected a few of what I've only learnt on my witchy journey. Maybe you will learn something new! Enjoy.

Staring of with a cliché - Besoms are a witches tool

No, witches don't ride on brooms, but we certainly use them for our craft. Or rather for cleansing. A witches broom will clean out unwanted energy, or bring positive energy into your home, depending on how you sweep.

Hang your broom over your doorstep to keep out negativity and ill-doers.

Some witches believe, that when they move, they should not bring the broom into the new home to not carry old energy along. Other witches burn their broom once a year to get rid of all the negative energy that the besom caught over the year

Mirrors are portals to other dimensions

There are other dimensions, I have yet to learn how many, maybe there are endless. Anyhow, they are there and there are portals around you in your everyday life. Best example are mirrors. Ever looked in a mirror and saw someone 's else eyes? Or felt like you were watched through a mirror? There is a reason why a form of divination uses mirrors. Other of these portals would be dark and separated rooms, like your attic or cellar - like, some people don't like to go to these rooms because they can feel the presents of these otherworldly energies. Under the bed or the closet can be portals, too. Maybe you know the tale of the black man in the closets? Or maybe you were afraid of the monsters under your bed when you were little? As children we were more sensitive to these energies and more open to notice portals and their presence. So, if you are a mother or father and your child is afraid of the darkness under its bed or the cellar, don't blame them. You can rather help them with putting water next or under the bed. Water can close portals and help protect your children. Just make sure, to pour that water out in the morning and put new one in the bowl or glass before bed. I like to sleep on my crystals. Black obsidian, clear quartz or amethyst. I either wear them as necklace or put them under my pillow. If you don't like those methods you can also make small protective, sleep pouches with crystals and herbs and hang them over your bed. Personally, I feel the most comfy and save when my cat sleeps next to me. Pets do have a protective aura to them. Some children also carry their protector plushies with them.

Additional to this, we are most sensible to the other world during the night time and ... nightlights don't help with fear of darkness. Maybe you were afraid of the dark as child, like I was and thought that in the darkness there are more ghost and spirits and creatures following us. That is actually not true. They are there, even during the light is on. It is just, that in the darkness, we are more aware of our surroundings on a more energetic level, if that makes sense. You rely more on your sixth senses than on your sight. And with sight I mean like mundane sight, not the divination sight. Therefore, if you feel afraid of the dark because of the creatures luring in it ... they are there during the day, too. ... That didn't make it any better, did it? I am sorry - same as with what I said protecting against spirits and other presences from portals, carry a protective sachets or crystals with you when you really need to turn out the lights. Or cleanse and protect your house regularly to keep unwanted energies out. If you really encounter a spirit that you want gone, just tell them. Be confident while doing so. Most of them will disappear, they don't want to harm you. They don't need your attention or approval, they just have a need for communication like we humans do, too.

Emotions and spell work

I've heard this a lot and I also questioned it when I was still a baby witch... do my emotions effect my practice. I never got a clear answer to that, to be honest. I have heart both, yes and no. Some say your emotions doesn't effect your work as long as your intentions are still clear, some say that negative emotions will  counteract your spells. I personally noticed, that when I am stressed or in a hurry or just can't focus well because there are other things on my mind, the spells and charms won't work as well or not at all. That is probably connected to my intention setting, but I've never noticed that emotions like anger or envy made my spells lacking or ineffective. I have read though before, that you should never enter a protection circle or ritual, holding any grudges or anger and fear. Simply because these emotions will make you questioning yourself and focus on what you don't have and so and as we should know with intention setting and manifesting, we should always form positive intentions and negative emotions like envy will manifest the negative things.

From personal experience, I can also tell you, that my negative emotions started to disappear as soon as I started a ritual or spell, simply because I had to focus on something positive and the practice has something meditative in my opinion. But please, this goes to all the witches out there, do not start hexing or cursing someone because you are annoyed by them or angered or jealous. I don't personally believe in the three folded law - I am not Wiccan - but I do believe in a concept of karma. Even if it doesn't come back to you the same way or doesn't effect you, you will feel it someday. And to be honest, it is just mean. I mean, magick is such a wonderful gift and you can use it for sparking joy and making stuff happen, and it is enough for someone you don't want in your life because this person hurt you or annoyed you or just drains you of all energy, to build some protection and maybe banish them. A simple spell for a communication break is the freezing spell. Write the persons name you want to break with on a piece of paper and put it in a freezer back, fill in a bit of water and put it in the freezer. Enjoy your time without them. Another and this is a really powerful charm to change someone is ... talk to them. I may be a witch but I do not start charming and performing spells when I have a simpler and mundane solution to my problem. Talk to that person. Tell them you are jealous of them and ask how they got where they are and maybe they will even help you, or tell them to leave you alone, tell them you are sorry, that they drain you of energy, give you headaches, that they've hurt you. They will either in worst scenario leave you alone or for the best you will find a solution together. Talking to a person will definitely open their eyes and your hearts and that's what relationships should all be about. And if that person leaves you alone and you part ways, it has been time for this relationship to end.

Ringing ears

Another thing I learnt about spirits is ... that they will make your ears ring. Sometimes you may feel pressure in your ears or hear undefined ringing. That may is an indicator, that a spirit is trying to communicate with you. Or you just have tinnitus, but who knows, maybe people with tinnitus are just clairaudient people.

There is no such thing as black and white magick

Black Magick and White Magick are terms used to describe good and bad magical practice ... that is not true. There is no such thing as good or bad magickal practice. The term black magick comes from the correlation to the slave trade between the 16th and 19th century. Those slaves were often taught folkmagick, which seemed really dark and, well, evil to the Caucasians living in the new world. These practices were said to correspond with the power of the devil - therefore the correlation from black magick and evil magick. Black magick is actually just a racist term, ther you have it.

Same goes for white magick. This kind of magickal practice is related to the "white" population of the northern globe and as opposite to the black and foreign and "evil" magick used for healing and with the consent of saint and god - if god didn't want a witches power to work, the devil wouldn't be able to lend it to witches.

If you want to refer to evil or good magick, please don't say black and white magick. While we are at it: the difference between good and bad is only a witches intention. If your practice serves neutral or good purpose, such as healing, support etc. it is referred to as good magick, while magick that hurts and harms others is called evil.

What kind of things did you learn till now, that you did find interesting or surprising? Let's talk in the comments and share some knowledge!

Till next time and blessed be,
