Symbolism
THE CIRCLE
The circle is formed by an infinite line, symbolizing eternity and unity.
It is said to be able to capture something inside or protect from the outside forces. Nowadays circles are formed to draw and focus energy.
A circle is also used to symbolize the element air, as it is infinity and everywhere.
A popular symbol of the infinite circle is the ouroboros - a snake biting its own tail forming and eternal circle. It symbolizes eternity.
THE MOON
The moon obviously symbolizes the moon, but also ferminity.
Many witches call the moon mother or grandma moon and refer to it as she.
The phases of the moon symbolize immortality, eternity and the overall rhythm of time.
A crescent moon is also the symbol for water, which is associated with femininty and wisdom.
THE SPIRAL
The spiral is often seen in faery related traditions. It represents a journey or a labyrinth, that leads us from blindness to enlightenment. In Wicca there is a dance that is inspired by the spiral and therefore associated with "reclaiming" movement.
A spiral deosil (clockwise) symbolizes rebirth, whereas a spiral widdershins (counterclockwise) represents spirituality.
FEARY STAR
A star of seven points also called septagram is sometimes used with/or instead of the pentacle.
This symbol roots in the Celtic mythology and believes involving the fea.
The seven points represents:
1. the sun
2. the wood
3. the sea
4. the magick
5. the moon
6. the wind
and 7. the spirit.
Alternatively, the seven points represents
1. power, personal will and determination
2. unconditional love, wisdom and growth
3. knowledge and intelligence
4. harmony and tranquility
5. power of the mind and science
6. devotion and honesty
and 7. magick and connection
Sidenote: Stars are said to be a gateway into the otherworld, each point of the star one of the seven entrances into the faery roam.
TE TRIPLE MOON
The triple moon is a wiccan symbol, symbolizing the mother goddess or triple goddess. The maiden, the mother and the crone are symbolized by the waxing, the waning and the full moon. They are figures for the three states ones life through goes. The maiden symbolizes new beginnings, the mother of course fertility and motherhood, the crone is commonly pictured as old witch, full in its power and wisdom.
THE HORNED GOD
A Wiccan symbol of the horned god.
A full moon with a crescent moon on top.
It is the symbol for the wiccan lord, often called horned god or Cernunnos.
He is not the god of the death and equilized to the devil as many misbelieves, but a god of fertility.
He is the connection between nature and humanity.
Triquetra
This symbol is used by paganism and Wicca. In some teachings it represents the triple moon.
It is formed out of the celtic knot and a circle. The space between the knots stand for should,mind and the body and the spaces between the knot and the circle around it, represents life, death and rebirth.
It is said to be a sign of empowerment thought the infinite line that forms the symbol.
In magical practice it is used to draw power from the divine world into our mundane realm and release it again.
This symbol is also used by Christianity as it represents the holy trinity. The word Triquetra comes from the latin word for triangle.
THE EYE OF HORUS
An egyption symbol adapted by other beliefs ad traditions. The eye protects against evil and connotes to health and power. Horus, the god of the sky, hunters, war and kingship, is depicted as human with eagle head. He is the protector of the rulers. In the Egyptian mythology Horus eyes were destroyed and then resorted, making the eye a symbol of transformation, healing and redemption. Sometimes it is referred to as wedjat. It is similar to the eye of Ra, sharing the same symbolism but from a different god.
SERPENT
Snakes and spirants can be found in nearly every culture and does not symbolize anything negative at all. Mostly the serpent is a hoy animal. It is a symbol for spirits, the divine, enlightenment, power of transformation, wisdom and healing. You may have seen a staff coiled up with snakes as symbol for health organizations.
THE WITCHES KNOT
This symbol has been used to banishing and warding off evil as well as malevolent witchcraft. Historically witches knotted to tie up magick. The witches knot or magick knot can also be a symbol for a group of four, e.g. four season, four Elements. Over all the witches knot is a symbol of protection.
HECATES WHEEL
Hecate being the mother and goddess of witchcraft is often represented by the triple goddess.
Heactes wheel symolizes the three stages of womanhood, which are maiden, mother and crone. Hecate is the goddess of crossroads, such as the crossraods between the stages of life.
The wheel symbolizes these phases with a labyrinth and represents the power and knowledge in moving through life.
The Wheel symbolizes femininity and transformation.
